The Process

3" Squares were cut from the over-dyed, quilted, cotton musical fabric and appliqued to the background, quilted, cotton "vine" fabric--using zig-zag--now ready to be "squared-up", cut to size, and bound on the edges in preparation for the final stage of presentation.

The quilting begins...I chose the same programmed, embroidery stitch that I used with the musical fabric...thought for a moment that I would do free-motion, following the design of the grapes and leaves, but changed my mind (I'm not sure why?)...and am using an invisible thread for quilting, as I do not wish to add any more color to the fabric--only texture, with the ability to hold weight, if I decide later to "hang" a found object!!!

Often a wonderful fabric is found, but just doesnt fit the color "scheme"...so the process of over-dying takes place, as demonstrated below, in the beginning of the process of a new art quilt. I continue in the series--"Nine Patch becomes Wine Patch"--and will document the process as I work to finish this new piece...

A black and white commercial cotton, over-dyed and machine quilted with a programmed, embroidery stitch--with metallic thread.
A blue and white cotton dish towel, over-dyed to teal/purple.

CHAIRS FOR AN ARTIST!

Several years ago I acquired a little black, drop-leaf table from my Grandmother. Having no chairs to go with the table, I "found" these 2 director chairs--painted them and quilted backs and seats. I haul the "green/turquoise/purple" chair to all the art venues I do, and everyone wants my chair!!!...So now the process is on to include "chairs" in my "repertoire"!!!

A LITTLE WHIMSICAL

"KITCHEN" 2007

  • Mixed Media Collage SOLD

Ideas often come from the spoken or written word...

"FOUND AN OLD DOG AND HE SEEMS TO LIKE ME" 2007

  • Mixed Media Collage SOLD

I love listening to Tom Waits...on a song from his "Mule Variations"

I hear these lyrics, over and over, as I put the CD on repeat as I work

my art...I did find an "old"dog--I believe an old ceramic? bookend that fit perfectly inside the wooden box (did I mention I have some kind of fixation

with boxes???)...and then I found a scottie dog on a sweater from the thrift

store that certainly wasn't meant for the sweater, but on a quilted fabric for

an art quilt!

Detail-"The Cellar"

Having served in fine-dining for 7 years, I learned so much about wine, and it so inspired me, from the information I required for selling, the smell, the visual presentation itself, and mostly, the TASTE! I saved every cork from every bottle of wine I served to my guests for all those years, and sure found a way to use them!!! As I took all of this in, on a daily basis, it would offer inspiration for art quilts with a wine theme. The following are some of these pieces I made--some for sale and some sold. This theme continues in my work!!! You may contact me for information regarding each piece at colleenkay13@msn.com

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!...I love yard art, as well as quilt art, so I topped one of my bottle trees with a star to deck it out for the holidays!!!

PEACE and LOVE to ALL!!!
Posted by Picasa
Inspired by a story I heard on NPR (?fictional), in which a young boy was giving his older brother a book titled "Hot Sex for Cold Fish" before his upcoming marriage...well, this was all I needed to make this wall quilt, having on hand, the Indonesian Batik panel (middle panel)...I crazy-pieced the other two panels, machine embroidered the seams, free-motion quilted the entire quilt and found fishing lures to stitch onto the top and bottom panels (in strategic position!!!)...and then remembered the "fish" I had purchased from a flea market dealer--made from ball jar lids, aluminum, and some kind of tin can (face), all mounted onto 2 old license plates!--to hang the quilt from.
" Hot Sex for Cold Fish-II" 2007

This is a good example of what I mean when I say my work is taking a 3-D effect...I was at my favorite country auction, beyond Lacey Springs, AL--about 20 miles from Huntsville. I was "highest" bidder for the old wall pocket (some type of ceramic-labeled JAPAN on the back)--I just loved the grapevine design of the pocket--and being constantly inspired to make "wine" theme art quilts I knew that somehow I would incorporate it onto a quilt.

I free-motion machine quilted the whole piece of commercial, cotton Batik--in a floral design, as I would imagine "flora" amongst the vines in a vineyard...zigzaged the edges...mounted the finished piece onto an open, wooden frame (frame "found" somewhere???)...attached a hook on the back of the frame, in which to hook the wall pocket to...and then added some "found" tin leaves to put into the pocket. (One day, I'll post a picture of my "found" objects!!!!)

"Around the Vine" 2007
An engineering nightmare!!!...the idea was to make 9 separate pieces that all hung as 1, but hung separate from each other!!!...I'll explain it all soon!

What Makes A House A Home?...it is not the Roof or the Door...

I am currently working on a series of mixed media collages, with the theme of a home. Each collage is one of a kind, in which I incorporate quilted houses--with embellishment. The door of each house opens with a symbol of "LOVE" stitched within. Presentation is on a stretched, painted canvas--ready for hanging--in which the house with all embellishment is stitched onto the canvas.
